Gentian Properties and Uses: Tonic, invigorating digestaid, gout, fever, powerful alterative (changes for the good), fevers, oxygenator, general debility, anxiety, increased immunity, female weakness, dizziness.
Common Names: Yellow Gentian, Bitter Root, Enzian, Gentian.
Bodily Influences: This invigorating tonic is handed down to us from the very early antiquity of medicine, from the Greeks, Arabs and others, long forgotten. In Germany & Austria, it is customary in pubs to include on the shelf, a little clay jug with a glazed finish and characteristic blue Gentian flower and is dispensed under the name Enzian (Gentian) as an immediate remedy of over indulgence. While its taste does not immediately recommend its use, its effect is sought after and a person learns to appreciate its taste for that reason. Its roots contain a vast quantity of condensed oxygen, thus occurs an exhilarating tonic action. Recognized medical use from the time of antiquity to date would fill a volume all its own. Perhaps it is best for us to think of it as containing 6 powerful digestaids. The Dispensatory of the U.S. offers this word of highly significant and workable advice in the use of Gentian: “It is the condition of the stomach and the system generally, not the name of the disease which must be taken into consideration when prescribing it. There is scarcely a complaint in which it cannot be advantageously given under all circumstances.”
At once a person sees a prevailing philosophy by which the herbalist is often considered to work miracles. While diagnostic machines with mysterious names and “buzzers and lights” are no doubt impressive and expensive, they are not necessary to building better health naturally. What is necessary is to know the remedy and use it. Beyond this, happy chemists in their sterile towers can busy themselves finding the mechanisms of herbs or why a remedy works the way it does. When they do, we will be receptive to hear their findings, as it will be interesting. But for the herbalist, building better health is as simple as recognizing we do have herbal solutions for physical problems, seeing what herbs are needed to get at the root cause of the malfunction in that area of the body and using it. Then health returns and we are all happier.
DOSAGE: 10 to 40 drops following meals or more if overindulgence demands.
HELPING THE HEART:
Restore circulation to the heart and extremities with L-carnitine. The body makes L-carnitine from protein. If there are digestive problems, it makes good sense to use a digestaid when eating protein. GINGER, GENTIAN, SWEET ROOT and D-W are good choices. Most people who are not in good health tend to have digestion problems. That is one of the reasons they are sick. As protein is digested in the body, parts of a complete high quality protein are used by the liver and kidneys to make L-carnitine. It is now fairly well documented by observation and science that this substance L-carnitine is very helpful to handle circulation problems where the heart itself does not get enough blood. This is known as cardiac ischemia. L-carnitine also helps when the arteries that are far away from the heart do not get enough blood. This is known as peripheral arterial disorder. They are developed disorders. Since they are developed, they can be un-developed. To ensure that the liver and kidneys can make enough L-carnitine, a person should consume a high-quality, easily-digested protein on a regular basis. BEE POLLEN, FIVE GOOD, PROTEIN EXTRACT, BREWER’S YEAST and YOGURT are excellent sources of such protein. – excerpted from the copyrighted works of Dr. A. B. Howard
March. 13, 2007 " My friend's sister has Diverticulosis and she was in pain all of the time. Myself and a few friends put our heads together and came up with an herbal program for her along with a special diet. That is something the doctors didn't do. Within a month or two she was out of pain. Here is what we did: Green drink 3x's/day, Cascara Sagrada 1 capsule/day, Psyllium Seed Husk 2 capsules/day, Gentian 8-10 drops 3x's/day, goats milk, barley broth, grains, no fried foods, no red meat and no skin or batter. She mostly ate chicken, turkey, fish or olive oil. Thank God for Pure Herbs." --Constance Sabrosky, Warren, MI
